Spring Break is Here!

Hello! Apologies for not posting for awhile; I've been absolutely swamped with essays, as well as a nasty cold. This past week and a half I've focused a great deal on writing and editing my first 3 essays, which I officially submitted last night! When I return from Spring Break, I will be submitting 5 more essays (though I've put that out of my mind for now!).

Last night, I went to Spamalot at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End with other Boston College students. Though I had low expectations, I actually really enjoyed the show!

Today is a very exciting day, because my family has finally arrived in London! Mom, Dad, and John (unfortunately no pups) will be here for 10 days, 5 of which will be spent in London, and 5 of which will be spent in Berlin! I've missed them so much, and am so happy they are finally here.

With that, I will not be posting for the next 3 weeks, as I head off on a Spring Break trip of a lifetime: Berlin, Paris, Istanbul, Amsterdam, and Brussels! As always, I will be sure to take tons of pictures, and will do a lot of blogging about my trip once I return to London. Till then - CHEERS!

Covent Garden, The National Gallery, and 2 Iconic Pubs

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a little while, but I've been spending a lot of time working on my essays, which I'm trying to have completed by the time my family gets here (which is only about 10 days away!).

To play catch up for a minute: last Saturday I went to Covent Garden, a major shopping district near Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. It reminded me a lot of the Quincy Market area in Boston, full of restaurants and shops, as well as smaller carts and food stands selling pretty much everything. One of the coolest things, though, was the street performers. I swear, I had never seen anything like it!

How is this man doing this? I have no idea.

Yesterday, although I didn't have any classes, I spent the day working on my essays. I have to admit, I definitely fell out of the routine of doing school work on a regular basis, and it's been difficult to get back into it. But, I'm making good progress, and am still finding time to have some fun sightseeing in London!

Today was a wonderful day. Eric and I went to Big Chill House, a local pub/bar/cafe just 2 blocks from our dorm, for our first ever full English breakfast. I can't believe it took me 2 months to finally get around to having a this famous meal, but it was absolutely delicious!

This afternoon, Eric and I visited The National Gallery, which is right in Trafalgar Square. You are not allowed to take pictures inside the gallery, but the building is absolutely stunning. I'm not a huge art fan, but it was really amazing to see some of the most famous paintings in the world, especially those painted by Vincent Van Gogh, up close.

After visiting the National Gallery, Eric and I went to 2 iconic English pubs, recommended by Eric's great uncle. The first, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, first opened in London in 1538, and was rebuilt after the Great Fire in 1667. The pub has numerous different rooms, with low ceilings and narrow stair-wells. Eric and I sat in the Cellar Bar, which is in the basement.

We then moved on to dinner at The Blackfriar. Even though we went at a typically busy time (7pm on a Saturday), we were able to get a table in their small dining room. We had wings and burgers, and an apple crumble cake for dessert - everything was so delicious!

Today, I was able to visit some of the most famous places in London, and it was a great experience. I can't believe I've already been here for more than 2 months; the time is flying by! In 10 days, my family will finally arrive, and after that, I'll be off on the trip of a lifetime for Spring Break!

Harry Potter Studio Tour!

Today I was able to travel 20 miles outside of London to Waltham, where I immersed myself in one of my childhood (and teen, and current, let's be honest) obsessions: HARRY POTTER. That's right, today Eric and I went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour!

We took a high-speed train (which only took about 15 minutes) from Euston Station to the Watford Junction train stop, where we then boarded the Harry Potter Studio Tour shuttle bus to Warner Brother's Studios. It was a little pricey, and I was worried that it would not be worth the money, but boy was I wrong.

Although much of the 8 films were shot in locations around London and the United Kingdom, there were certain sets, such as the Great Hall and the Gryffindor Common Room, that remained in Warner Brother's Studios for the duration of filming, and are now open to the public. Even cooler than that, the Warner Brother's Studio also houses hundreds of props from the films, as well as exhibits about the set designs, costumes, and technology involved in creating each movie. Here is the day in pictures and captions!

If you're not a Harry Potter fan (Dad), then this post probably didn't mean anything to you. But if you are a Harry Potter fan (Kim J - I was thinking of you all day!), then you understand how epic this is! Going to school in London always reminds me of scenes and references from Harry Potter, but this day took that to a new level!
